Vertigo can feel like the room is spinning, the floor is shifting, or your balance disappears without warning. Many cases begin in the inner ear, but dizziness can also be associated with the brain, medications, circulation, migraines, or the neck. When ear-related testing does not explain recurring dizzy spells, the upper cervical spine may deserve closer attention.
Cervicogenic dizziness is a term used for dizziness linked with neck pain or restricted cervical movement. It is generally considered only after other potential causes have been evaluated because there is no single test that confirms it.
The upper neck contains joints, muscles, and sensory receptors that help the brain understand head position and movement. If signals from the neck do not coordinate properly with information from the eyes and inner ear, a person may feel unsteady, disoriented, or dizzy. Symptoms may appear after whiplash, a concussion, prolonged poor posture, or another strain affecting the cervical spine.
A cervical connection may be worth discussing when dizziness occurs with:
• Neck pain, stiffness, or reduced range of motion
• Symptoms that increase with certain head or neck positions
• Headaches beginning near the base of the skull
• A history of whiplash, concussion, falls, or repetitive strain
• A floating, swaying, or off-balance feeling rather than intense spinning
• Ear testing that has not identified a clear cause
These signs do not prove that the neck is responsible. They help guide a more complete evaluation.
Upper cervical chiropractic care focuses on the alignment and movement of the top two vertebrae, commonly called the atlas and axis. At Dawn of Health Chiropractic, Dr. James Strunk evaluates each patient before recommending care. The practice uses detailed analysis and gentle, instrument-assisted techniques designed to address identified upper cervical imbalances.
The goal is not to treat every type of vertigo as a neck problem. It is to determine whether cervical dysfunction may be contributing to symptoms and whether upper cervical care belongs in a coordinated plan. Some patients may also need evaluation from a primary care physician, ear specialist, neurologist, vestibular therapist, or another healthcare provider.
If recurring dizzy spells are paired with neck discomfort or have not been fully explained, schedule an evaluation with Dawn of Health Chiropractic. Visit our office in Apex, NC, or call (919) 303-2213 to book an appointment.
